BUILD A COLLABORATIVE LEADERSHIP TEAM - MAYBE?
One of the most frequent requests made by CEO’s is for me to help their “C” or leadership teams be more collaborative. I understand the desire to move away from silos and build more cooperation. However, this popular word has a different meaning to many leaders.
TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT!
One SVP said to me “just tell the boss to let me know what he wants, and I will deliver it!” This individual was a solid people pleaser and did not realize it.
Psychology tells us that about 35% of those in leadership roles see their task as pleasing others. As long as others are happy, they are doing a great job.
Not so!
THE OPPOSITE APPROACH
Another SVP in coaching responded when I shared that her direct reports were very upset with her style. She told me that they were just know knowledgeable as she is and not qualified. I then asked why all the peers had the same feedback. Her response was the same. This is either arrogance or being totally out of touch.
There is a better alternative than people pleasing, and it is a fundamental element in Modern Leadership.
Bring out the best in yourself and in others! Short and sweet but I have seen it work over and over. Try it and see the difference it will make.
